The Miyoo Mini Plus is a Linux based device. It has a 3.5-inch IPS display with a 640×480 resolution and as far as the size goes, it’s a bit smaller than a Gameboy which makes it insanely pocketable but also super easy to play. The design that I got to use was the transparent purple and it’s super nostalgic and gorgeous.

As far as buttons go, you’ve got your D-Pad, four face buttons, volume buttons (which double as brightness control), a menu button as well as four shoulder buttons on the back for console games that are surprisingly comfortable to hold.

As far as the games that it can play, it handles everything from GameBoy to GameBoy Advance as well as PlayStation 1 and a bunch of SEGA systems with absolute ease. Majority of my time was spent playing PS1 games, and I was just consistently impressed with how well it handled each of them and let me swap between games super quickly. As of recently, the unit can also handle DS games, but that’s a little bit more of a struggle in terms of performance.

The games are stored on a MicroSD Card. I’d actually recommend buying the one included with the unit. It’s also 20% off HERE as it comes with the custom OS loaded on as well, but honestly for roughly $140, I can’t think of a better way to spend money for more enjoyment.

It can run a custom OS called OnionOS which I was absolutely blown away with. It’s super customisable with different themes, but more impressively, it runs a custom version of RetroArch with customisations that are fit for the ARM Cortex A7 1.2G processor to run games smoothly.

What I was most impressed with though is the fact that it auto saves when you get out of a game or sleep the device, but it also has an Xbox-like quick resume feature that not only lets you boot straight back into where you left a huge number of games, it also tells you how long you’ve played each for as well as a bunch of other useful data.

The battery on the life lasts 6-7 hours which is really serviceable given the size of the device, and it changes by USB-C. There’s also an audio jack at the botttom as well as a speaker, which was probably the only thing that did irk me a bit about the device. Because the speaker is at the front on one side of the device, I found that my hand would constantly muffle the sound when holding it.

The unit also has Wi-FI which can be used to get boxart, play with others over netplay and update the firmware remotely. I can’t explain how cool it was to see this mix of old-school gaming with modern technology right in front of me.

All-in-all, I’d really recommend picking one of these up just to mess around with. They’re a tonne of fun, and super great to carry around just to play retro games or other custom software. They’re currently 20% off and you can grab one HERE (or $155 from Amazon HERE)
